The hourly rate for this position is $17.00/hour This is an Hourly position.


Overview

16 hours/week; work schedule of 1:00pm 4:30pm; can be flexible with student

POSITION SUMMARY: The Ministry Coder Intern position assigns accurate ICD-CM/PCS & CPT/HCPCS codes to all pertinent diagnoses and procedures on inpatient, outpatient, emergency and ambulatory encounters. This position complies with coding guidelines, and abstracts all required information for statistical and reimbursement purposes. This position works closely with revenue cycle team members to ensure appropriate billing and reimbursement.

  1. Retrieves pertinent information from the medical record to assign ICD-CM/PCS and/or CPT/HCPCS codes.
  2. Inquires with physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in record is inadequate, ambiguous or unclear for complete documentation and accurate reimbursement.
  3. Monitors and completes assignments through work queues in the electronic health record to maintain compliance with coding guidelines.
  4. Reviews records to assure that physician documentation is complete and deficiencies resolved.
  5. Keeps informed of the coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Brings identified concerns to lead or manager for resolution.
  6. This position complies with official coding guidelines, AHA coding clinic, and facility coding guidelines in the capture of all required information for statistical and reimbursement purposes.
  7. Reviews and enters patient charges for facility and professional components.
  8. Meets coding productivity standards for specific coding assignment.
  9. Works both independently and in collaboration with others on team-oriented project work.
  10. Communicates professionally with project clients, working to develop creative solutions, openly embracing feedback, and engaging subject-matter expertise where appropriate.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Junior or Senior student attending college or university advancing towards Bachelor Degree program in health information management with completion of introduction diagnosis coding course, must have complete a college level course in medical terminology

OR currently enrolled in a Junior College advancing towards an Associates Degree program for health information management OR only enrolled in a certificate program (non-degree) program for health information management

Other skills/knowledge: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with various individuals throughout OSF Healthcare. Ability to multi-task, coordinate multiple projects, and have proven attention to detail.
